This is a little flash marketing tool for Slim Jim. The object is to catch the 'Snapalope' as it's eating under the red basket. To do so, pull the string by clicking on it. I dare you to capture more than seven. Because I can't.

This isn't the kind of thing I normally post, and I'm not trying to preach here, but I found it pretty amusing, regardless of your stance on the issue: Gay Marriage Killed the Dinosaurs.
And to keep things thoroughly game-related, here's an interview with one of Square-Enix's higher-ups on all things Final Fantasy, particularly its future on Nintendo consoles.
And, aw, what the heck? How about David Letterman's Top 10 George W. Bush moments?

Super Paper Mario

I finally picked this up tonight. I wasn't sure, but after quite a few good reviews, I decided to give it a go. I'm only just through World 1 (divided up by 4 chapters... 1-1, 1-2, etc.) and I'm enjoying it so far.
But don't take my word for it (cue Reading Rainbow theme)... until I'm further into it and can give a better opinion, here are a few other opinions that you might find intriguing:

- GameStooge review (4 of 5 stars - "It’ll definitely fill the void while waiting for the real “next-gen” Mario game: Super Mario Galaxy, and at this point is still one of the best games on the system.")
- TechDiversions review ("For $49.99 I cannot think of a better game for the Nintendo Wii than Super Paper Mario.")
- GameSpot review (8.8 - "Super Paper Mario brings Nintendo's quirky role-playing series to the Wii with great results.")

Also! If you use things like Twitter, Jaiku (which you should), LiveJournal or just need a convenient way to write to-do's, reminders and the like, you should check out IMified, which lets you update or do all those things and more right from your IM client.

I find this story particularly relevant, because it happened not too far from here. Apparently, a student called in to his school district to listen to a recorded message about school delays, and when the school found a bomb threat the next day, they immediately attributed it to the student because of the close proximity of the times of the two messages.
Except that they weren't close, because the school forgot to update their daylight saving's time for the hot line.
Whoops.
Also, a few Guitar Hero 3(!) tidbits:
(And I'm sorry -- I couldn't resist with the image! I felt it fit the above news story pretty well, too)

Also, a few Guitar Hero 3(!) tidbits:
- Guitar Hero 3 will be multiplayer ready? It'd better be!
- It'll also be wireless? That's great and all, but, ahh... why not just release a wireless 360 controller that can also be used for GH2? That's part of the reason I haven't bought it (besides the ridiculously high price point)... I already have a wireless guitar for my PS2 version, I don't want to get the 360 and be downgraded... demoted, even... to a wired guitar. *spit*

The best time of the week, you know. *rolls eyes*
A few gaming links for you. First, here's an editorial on unlocking content in games. There's a belief going around that, hey, you paid your money, you should have access to everything in the game without having to earn it. There's merit to that argument, but that also takes away some of the challenge. What do you think?
I was linked to a preview of a game called "Left 4 Dead," which at first glance seems to be just another survival horror game, but be sure to read the whole preview: you'll quickly realize that this one could be much, much more.
Ah, the good ol' 8-bit Mario. Where do you look your best?
An article entitled "Surrounded by Adventure-Game Fans in a Vegas Hotel" has some interesting opinions by different "legends" in the adventure game genre, such as Al Lowe (Leisure Suit Larry), Scott Adams (Adventureland) and a few others. I say it a lot: the adventure game genre might be on the brink of a comeback, thanks to a few strong efforts recently.
As for non-gaming links, well, I have to offer you some yellow and red plants in space. How can you turn that down?
Oh, and some wacky British cars. Enjoy!

New stuff
# posted by Chronodin @ 6:30 PM
Ah, yes, an all-encompassing, frustratingly generic post title. Just what I needed to jump-start the ol' creative juices, don't you agree?
First off, I'll admit it -- I caved. I bought an Xbox 360. I KNOW, I KNOW... you may toss words at me like, "Traitor!" "Hypocrit!!" and "Blasphemer!!!" and while I think that last one might be a bit obsessive, I won't fault you for it. But I do have my good reasons.
I did wait quite a while before getting one... I wasn't sold at first... sure, the graphics were pretty but there weren't any games that really screamed, "Buy me!"
Time passes...
There have been more and more games popping up that I wanted (Gears of War, of course, Dead Rising, Crackdown...) and more coming out later that I definitely want (Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey...), and when someone I know offered to sell his for a pretty darn good deal, I couldn't pass it up. So I did, picked up Gears of War and knew it was a good decision.
(I was going to throw a few Game Rankings links on there, but they were offline when I typed this post, so go look 'em up sometime on your own if you really want to see. You're a big kid, I know you can do it.)
Gears of War is great. But you've probably heard that plenty of times already. Let me say one thing about the 360... looking at screenshots (and often times, videos) on the computer doesn't really do justice to its graphics for many games. I always thought, "Oh, Gears looks good, but why does everyone say how great its graphics are?" When you play it for real, you shall see. It's a VERY pretty game.
But that wasn't what inspired me to make this post... no, my friends, rather I just picked up Xbox Live (the Gold membership, 'natch.) and I have to say that this truly is, as they say, the way an online service should be. It's quick, well-organized, and has really good free and premium content. Buying games like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and TMNT, the original arcade game, works great, and you can get demos of tons of games... both Live Arcade games (such as aforementioned Castlevania and Turtles) and actual 360 games. Being able to download demos for so many 360 games for free is an excellent experience, and REALLY helps you to decide if you want to spend your hard-earned $60 on a game.
The Wii store works well, but speeds have been a problem for me, and I've heard others complain about the Wii's wi-fi not being the best, and it's kinda true. But I'll admit... I do wish the 360 had built-in wi-fi. I didn't want to spend the $100 it costs to get a wireless adapter for the system, so I moved it upstairs to the room with my router, and wired it works just great, but the TV up here is, shall we say, much smaller than the living room television.
The other problem with the Wii store is the only things you can really get, other than a few select Wii channels, are the Virtual Console games. And apart from a few gems, there are a lot of games on there I don't have much desire to play, and nothing is free, nor are there any free demos. Demos is a big one for me, but the Wii also doesn't have a big enough hard drive to support downloading too much in the way of large demos. So it's a bit of a frustrating situation. For one, I think Nintendo would be wise to introduce original content onto their Virtual Console, and soon.
Anyway... there were a couple other new things I wanted to talk about... what were they... hmm...
Oh, right! Rush's new song is, shall we say, awesome. Even if you're not much of a Rush fan, which I don't know if I'd be considered one or not: I like something like two songs of theirs, and one only because it's in Guitar Hero 2, but their new one, "Far Cry," is a goodie. Check it out.
And yes, that's an iTunes store link. So?
The other NEW thing is that I'm leaning away from Twitter and towards an alternative called Jaiku. It has some more features than Twitter, making Twitter look pale by comparison. So go, quickly, and sign up for it, then come friend me.
And as a reward for reading my ramblings today, here are some snowmen inspired by Calvin and Hobbes. You'll like this one.

Information, baby chicks and the universe

Sounds like a book from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, doesn't it?
It seems Google, in their never-ending quest to be the leader in... well... everything, has opened the beta of their new Google Voice Local Search. It's basically the same as calling 411, but it's free. I tried it, and it's not too bad, and the number -- 1-800-GOOG-411 -- isn't all that hard to remember.
I'm not yet sure how it ties into anything, but Chick Chick Boom is a pretty neat little flash game by Nintendo that requires you to draw simple items or commands with intentions of destroying the bad chicks, or whatever they are. I've only played it on my laptop, and let me warn you, playing this game on a trackpad isn't your best option, but the game IS fun regardless, and I look forward to actually playing it with a mouse.
And finally for tonight... ever feel like you really need a sense of scale for, say, everything in the universe from the tiniest little proton to, uh, the universe itself? Then you, my friend, are in luck. Universcale is just what you need.

Informal link dump
# posted by Chronodin @ 11:09 PM
The link dump term isn't something I came up with. Not that it's, you know, going to win any awards for brilliant creativity, but it fits well-enough, and I just couldn't in good conscious take credit for it -- what credit there might be, at least.
(Does anyone else find themselves constantly having to think about how the word "conscious" is spelled?)
In gaming news, you might have heard about the new game featuring -- are you ready? No, really, are you ready for this? -- Mario and Sonic. I know, I know, ten years ago we would have referred to such a game while detailing icy, snowball-filled adventures in Satan's backyard, but it's happened. Are you excited to hear this news? Then you'd better prepare yourself to find out that it not only features Mario and Sonic, but it features Mario and Sonic at the Olympics.
I'll let the excitement die down before going on.
In all seriousness, there have been many mixed reactions about this. A lot of negatives, of course, considering the idea is kind of dumb and has the potential to be an awful game, but there have been positive reactions, mostly on the potential that it might have. I suspect it will be a Mario Party-ish game featuring Olympic-ish minigames and themes and Mario and Sonic-ish characters. If done well, the game could very well be a lot of fun... certainly not the Mario and Sonic game many of us dreamed about, but it's a start.
Not to mention it's one step closer to Sonic the Hedgehog being named a character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Also, apparently Sony's execs aren't the only ones who need to keep their feet out of their own mouths.
Furthermore: If you haven't heard about Rock Band, well, read on, children.
Taking things in a totally different direction, although I didn't go to WVU, I am from West Virginia, and WVU is pretty much the closest thing we have to professional sports teams, so needless to say, I am a fan. Which is part of why I can only sigh and shake my head in regards to a certain typo on their t-shirt commemorating their National Invitation Tournament title.
Remember The Truman Show? Justin.tv is pretty much the same thing, 'cept the guy knows about it and is doing it himself. I won't lie; there is a certain addictive attraction to it.
And finally, Boomshine is a neat little game that requires you to blow up a certain number of... I dunno, shines? Things. Reminiscent of Missile Command, except you have just one missile. Give it a try, I suspect you'll pick up quickly. You're smart people.

Nothing like music from Castlevania being played on a 100-year-old pipe organ.
Read here for more information. But I gotta admit -- as cool as this is, for all the attention Martin Leung really isn't all that great. His playing is really messy... they would have been better giving the arrangement to a professional organist. But, hey, that's just me.

But hilarious nonetheless!
I think if there really was a PG version of 300, it'd probably have to be about that long, too.
